Surfs Up

ADF Camp

From 10 – 12 June a group of students from the Defence Force Focus Group Program took part in the annual ADF Camp. This year we tested our beach skills by taking part in a surf inspired camp at Lancelin. Even though it was winter, we were prepared for the conditions that awaited us.

Every year the camp has a different focus. This year we looked closely at how we work together through the year groups and how our own self-talk can predict the outcome of a situation. This related to the main activity – surfing as it forced us to help each other out in the surf as well as tested our own belief of achieving a goal. That goal was riding the perfect wave!

We also used our time together to focus on how we react to situations of deployment, transition and posting. These topics were discussed and related to how we can change an outcome by how we “self-talk” about it. Students were asked to challenge a number of ways to think differently about unique ADF experiences.

I would like to thank Mr Ali Buckner for helping with the camp and giving up his time to attend. I would also like to thank all the fantastic students who travelled with us to Lancelin.
I hope you all had as great a time as I had.
