Mrs Lorna Joy- '30 Years Service to Catholic Education'

April 2008

Mrs Lorna Joy started her teaching career at St Joachim's Primary School in Victoria Park in 1977, where she taught all levels from one to seven. Additionally, she taught Sacramental programs and also implemented programs catering for students with special needs. During this period Lorna introduced a variety of initiatives including extension programs such as 'De Bono Lateral Thinking' and later Lidia Genevese's Changing Tracks. '

In 1990, Lorna participated in the Institute of Human Development Program with Dr Patrice Cooke and Father Desmond Murphy. This enabled her to take on the role of School Counsellor. Additionally, Lorna was responsible for Special Needs and Enrichment Programs. In 1993 Lorna began her Psychology training on a part time basis at Curtin University while still maintaining her position in the Primary School. Here she was to introduce and implement Aussie Optimism Programs to all Year Seven students as part of the Health Curriculum.

Later Lorna also introduced into the school 'Seasons' Programs to Junior Students who were experiencing grief. Lorna continued on to complete her degree in Psychology and work at Ursula Frayne in both teaching and counselling roles. After graduation, she completed a supervision period, making her eligible to be fully registered as a School Psychologist. From 2000 to 2004 Lorna worked across both Campuses from year's k- 12 providing both Counselling and also in a teaching role as Aussie Optimism Coordinator.

In mid 2004 Lorna worked for one year at Coodanup Community College providing Counselling and Psychological Services in the Government Educational System.
In August 2005 Lorna began working at Kolbe Catholic College where she provides both a Counselling and Psychological Service to students.

Mr Trevor Galbraith - '30 Years Service to Catholic Education'

April 2008

Mr Trevor Galbraith commenced his teaching career in his hometown of Kalgoorlie in 1978 with the Christian Bothers at CBC Kalgoorlie. Trevor then became one of the foundation staff members of John Paul College, Kalgoorlie and after eight years he and his wife Julie, also a schoolteacher relocated to Perth.

From 1986 to 2001 Trevor roamed the corridors of Corpus Christi College in Bateman. During this prolonged stay at Corpus Christi, Trevor ventured to Trinity College in its Centenerary Year in 1994. From Corpus Christi Trevor moved to Sacred Heart College in Sorrento for 4 years before commencing a term as Assistant Deputy Principal at Kolbe College in 2006.

During his thirty years of service to Catholic Education, Trevor was for many years a Mathematics teacher before becoming heavily involved with Information and Communications Technology when computers became a tool of choice in education some fifteen or so years ago. Trevor reflected that among the many opportunities that have been bestowed upon him in his service to teaching the most satisfying include, leading a Pilgrimage of students from Corpus Christi College to work with Mother Teresa in Calcutta and the many and varied successes he has experienced with his involvement in College sporting teams, particularly football.

Inside the classroom, Trevor reflected that the challenge still is there today as it was 30 years to challenge students to achieve at their best. “Never be satisfied with a minimum effort” he said, which could help explain why Trevor was awarded the Australian Computer Educator of the Year in 2005.

Dr Arthur Mowle - '30 Years Service to Catholic Education'

March 2007

Dr Arthur Mowle was initially trained for the overseas medical missions of the Church. He commenced his teaching career in Western Australian Catholic secondary schools in 1973 and has mostly taught in the areas of human biology, religious education, remedial English, health education and general science. In addition to his teaching credentials, Dr Mowle holds qualifications in nursing, heal science, theology, pastoral studies and counselling/psychotherapy.

Looking back over his thirty plus ears in Catholic Education, Dr Mowle says that the one thing that kept him active in the teaching profession has been his never dimming realization that each and every student is a unique ‘soul’ working towards a personal ‘unfolding’; and he considers himself having been very much in a font-seat position watching developments. He firmly believes that students are very much individual ‘characters’ and have been such before birth, and that the primary aim of the teacher in schools is to assist the student to ‘discover’ and work with their particular ‘uniqueness’. In other words, provide opportunities for young people to embrace their real essence i.e. that which makes them so different from any body else.

Dr Mowle has been on staff at Kolbe since 2000 where he is currently employed as a school counsellor.

Dr Arthur Mowle - 'The Plato Medal of Honour'

Dr Arthur Mowle, our school counsellor/therapist, was presented with “The Plato Medal of Honour” by our Principal, Caroline Payne. This was presented on behalf of Dr Nicholas Law and the International Biographical Centre, Cambridge, UK.

Mr Laurie Mayne, ASM, a long term friend of Dr Mowle’s, presented a brief biographical sketch providing the reason for the IBC Award. The Award was for excellence in teaching, counselling and contributions to health sciences spanning decades.

Dr Mowle was asked to go to Oxford to attend the IBC World Forum and receive his Award but circumstances prevented him from attending, hence the presentation at Kolbe College.

Accompanying Mr Mayne was Dr R Gopalkrishnan, a medical psychotherapist, Mr Michael Van Spall, a trainee teacher who hopes to specialise in school counselling and Mr Brad Tyrrell, a teacher from Northam who is a specialist in IT. The Plato Award encapsulates some 33 years of Dr Mowle’s involvement in Western Australian Catholic secondary schools.
