Kolbe App

Ms Miller in her welcome to the Kolbe website describes that the diversity of student learning has shaped our teaching and learning program. Our goal is to prepare students for the world of the future and hence we embody a strong focus upon digital learning.

One young Year 12 man who has taken that concept to a new level is our College ICT Captain Mr Nathan Wood. In 2009 Nathan developed what has become a very popular app for the mobile devices used by staff and students at Kolbe College. The Kolbe App as it is known is a free download for iTunes and has embedded in three main functions for its users. Firstly each users individual timetable is inputted via the website http://www.kolbecdn.com which is currently maintained by Nathan himself for his 207 users. The second function is the ability of the user to read college electronic news as it is sent. Max’s Mail and other news can distributed in moments and accessed from the student’s mobile devices. The third function gives all users access to college web and wikis sites. Nathan’s work is exceptional and he recently was justifiably proud when in week 1 of Term 3 when his App appeared in the What’s Hot on the featured Educational Apps. Not bad for a young man from Kolbe College in Rockingham.

In moving forward Nathan had already developed the App for the new iPhone 4 as soon as it was released. Down the track Nathan hopes to make Version 2.0 of his App and possibly use his talent and time to give other schools who are willing to help with some financial support to establish their own data base and custom badging. Nathan received a great deal of support from ICT staff and was particularly complimentary about the efforts of his ICT teacher, Mr Tyrrell. As for his personal inspiration, Nathan says it started as a private application for myself to enter my timetable into – from there the world has come to his door.
