The current educational climate is a very exciting
and dynamic one with numerous curriculum changes
being made across all year levels. To help keep
parents abreast of the many curriculum developments
occurring at Kolbe, brief articles targeting key
issues will be regularly placed in the College
newsletter.
Any queries can be directed to Mr Jeff Allen
(Deputy Principal Curriculum) on 9591 4201.
In the last newsletter I mentioned the importance
of regular homework and study. An effective
routine takes on increased significance for
the Year 12 students as they enter the final
phase of their secondary education. Students
have the chance in their last months at Kolbe
to make a positive impact on their overall
level of achievement.
Wholly School Assessed students need to ensure
that quality work is submitted on time in a
bid to maximise their final grade and enhance
their prospects of acceptance into a course
of their choice at TAFE, or successful entry
into the workforce. University bound students
need to start preparations for their trial
and actual Tertiary Entrance/WACE Exams coming
up over the next few months.
Planning and preparation make study time more
effective. When studying, one should:
- Be an
active reader
- Seek assistance when unsure
- Work with a
partner/group to test progress
- Create an effective
study plan
For TEE students when preparing for exams:
- Practise
writing answers in limited time periods – tackle
a wide range of questions
- Familiarise yourself
with the current syllabus – these outline
examination details and the knowledge that
will be examined
- Use past TEE papers – they
show the style/type of questions that have
been asked in the past and you can practise
writing answers in a set time
- Read examiners’ reports – these
provide feedback from previous exams and
highlight common errors made.
2009 TISC, TAFE and Notre Dame applications
are now open. Year 12 students will be led
through the various enrolment processes by
staff of the College and organisation representatives.
Students in Years 10 and 11 too are looking
forward and have only recently completed their
selection of subjects for next year. Students
have been encouraged to set themselves up for
success through selecting a pathway suitable
to their particular traits and skills. All
subject selection forms by now should be submitted
to Course Advisors. Students with outstanding
forms run the risk of not receiving their preferred
selection of subjects. Students in Years 8
and 9, meanwhile, are in the process of selecting
their elective subjects for next year.
