YEAR 8 ORACY

As a College tradition each year, all Year 8 students participate in ORACY, a competition that develops their ability to speak in front of audiences and relate to people confidently. It is an exciting time in the College community where we invite students to bring along their favourite pet, sporting accessory or momento to share with an audience. In the past, we have seen some amazing props that have featured in students' speeches- cars, motorbikes, canoes, snakes, boats- you name it!

Year 8 Oracy is scheduled for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of Week 5. This was shifted slightly to accommodate for the change of Kolbe Day, which will be held Friday of Week 5.

Students will be assessed individually by an external examiner from ORACY. Each assessment will take approximately fifteen minutes and consists of four sections.

  • A hobby talk (using visual material)
  • Prepared reading from a novel or short story.
  • Poetry recitation (Memorised)
  • Questions may be asked by the assessor or the audience during or after the performance.

This is a valuable activity in our College community and all students are encouraged to practise in front of their Pastoral Care groups for feedback and support. Parents, please encourage your child to perform in front of family members. Overall, it has always been a rewarding and enjoyable experience for all competitors!

Miss Rose Mascaro
Oracy Coordinator

STUDENT ACTIVITIES TERM 3

There are many activities on offer at Kolbe in which students are welcome and encouraged to participate. Some are on a regular basis while others may be once a month or term. Earlier this year students had an opportunity to complete a survey indicating what sort of activities would appeal to them. This term we have started table tennis on Monday lunchtime and a lower school 5-a-side soccer tournament on Fridays. Girls’ teams are very much encouraged!! Chess club will be running on Tuesdays at lunchtime, while at 3.30 p.m. on Tuesdays any student can come to Rm 2.7 to paint and draw for pleasure.

A ‘one-off’ later this term is Cooking for Fun, to which students can come along after school and enjoy cooking a sumptuous meal which they will bring home for your family that evening – yummy!

Each Wednesday after school you can find the Kolbe Bush Cadets undertaking a variety of activities. This requires a larger term commitment on the part of the student, but if a student has an interest in this area – they can contact me.

There was a huge swell of interest for cheer leading and that is still a strong possibility this term on Monday mornings. Each Tuesday and Thursday morning and after school on Fridays, Mr Hagiwara will ensure your child’s fitness improves with a breakfast or beach run. Touch Rugby for Years 10 to 12 is just commencing and the Hobby and Modelling group – although small, is still active. I would like to express my appreciation of the dedicated staff who willingly give of their time to make all of the above happen and assure you that your student is most welcome to become involved in any of the activities or indeed make suggestions for new ones.

ENROLMENT POLICY

In making the decision to apply for admission at Kolbe Catholic College, we ask that parents consider their responsibility in entering a contract with the College to work in partnership to realise those aims and ideals of a Catholic Christian education.

At the discretion of the Principal, the following criteria are used to select those students for whom an offer of enrolment will be made:

  1. Catholic students from Catholic Primary School with a Parish Priest reference
  2. Catholic students from non-Catholic Primary Schools with a Parish Priest reference
  3. Other Catholic students from Catholic Primary Schools
  4. Other Catholic students from non-Catholic Primary Schools
  5. Students with siblings currently enrolled and whose families are supportive of the College
  6. Non-Catholic students from Catholic Primary Schools
  7. Non-Catholic students of other Christian denominations whose families are active members of their particular Church Community
  8. Students whose families indicate a genuine support of Christian principles, and who are prepared to accept and give positive support to the Christian ethos  of the College
  9. Students whose families signal their interest and intention by lodging an early Application with the College

Every effort will be made to accept sons and daughters of ex-students of the College, given the guiding principles of the Enrolment Policy.

Fundamental to Enrolment is:

  1. A student who is keen to maximise the opportunities offered
  2. A family who is keen to support the policies and the ethos of the school in the education of their child

Enrolments are dependant upon vacancies and the following conditions:

  1. Families complete an Application for Enrolment Form and provide this and a reference from a Parish Priest to the College
  2. Due dates for Applications, particularly for Year 7 entry, are adhered to
  3. Acceptance and participation in the Religious Education lessons and the religious practices of the College
  4. Student and parents attend an interview with the Principal or her delegate
  5. The signature of parents on the Admission Form is taken as acceptance of school policies, such as payment of fees, school regulations, parental  involvement, and students meeting attendance and academic requirements of the College
  6. Payment of the Admission Fee

The College applies the policies laid down by the Catholic Education Office with regard to students with disabilities, the gifted and talented and indigenous Australians.

It is a condition of enrolment that one full term's notice should be given in writing to the Principal by the parent/guardian, prior to the withdrawal of a student. In default of such notice, one quarter of the annual fee (one term's fee) will be payable.

Withdrawal of a newly enrolled student prior to their commencement will incur an administration fee of $100.

The Administration fee is non-refundable and does not guarantee enrolment. You may also include further information in support of this application, such as special interests, achievements, awards and references. The Enrolment Policy does allow preference to be given to children of families who are able to demonstrate an active association with a Church in their Parish.

All applications for Year 7 will generally be considered in the first half of the year two years prior to commencement of high school (ie. When your child is in Year 5).
