YEAR
8 ORACY
As a College tradition each year, all
Year 8 students participate in ORACY,
a competition that develops their ability
to speak in front of audiences and relate
to people confidently. It is an exciting
time in the College community where we
invite students to bring along their
favourite pet, sporting accessory or
momento to share with an audience. In
the past, we have seen some amazing props
that have featured in students' speeches-
cars, motorbikes, canoes, snakes, boats-
you name it!
Year 8 Oracy is scheduled for Tuesday,
Wednesday and Thursday of Week 5. This
was shifted slightly to accommodate for
the change of Kolbe Day, which will be
held Friday of Week 5.
Students will be assessed individually
by an external examiner from ORACY. Each
assessment will take approximately fifteen
minutes and consists of four sections.
- A
hobby talk (using visual material)
- Prepared
reading from a novel or short story.
- Poetry
recitation (Memorised)
- Questions may
be asked by the assessor or the audience
during or after the performance.
This is a valuable activity in our College
community and all students are encouraged
to practise in front of their Pastoral
Care groups for feedback and support.
Parents, please encourage your child
to perform in front of family members.
Overall, it has always been a rewarding
and enjoyable experience for all competitors!

STUDENT
ACTIVITIES TERM 3
There are many activities
on offer at Kolbe in which students are
welcome and encouraged to participate.
Some are on a regular basis while others
may be once a month or term. Earlier
this year students had an opportunity
to complete a survey indicating what
sort of activities would appeal to them.
This term we have started table tennis
on Monday lunchtime and
a lower school 5-a-side
soccer tournament on Fridays. Girls’ teams
are very much encouraged!! Chess
club will be running on Tuesdays at lunchtime,
while at 3.30 p.m. on Tuesdays any student
can come to Rm 2.7 to paint and draw
for pleasure.
A ‘one-off’ later this term
is Cooking for Fun, to which students
can come along after school and enjoy
cooking a sumptuous meal which they will
bring home for your family that evening – yummy!
Each Wednesday after
school you can find the Kolbe Bush
Cadets undertaking
a variety of activities. This requires
a larger term commitment on the part
of the student, but if a student has
an interest in this area – they
can contact me.
There was a huge swell
of interest for cheer
leading and that
is still a strong possibility this term
on Monday mornings. Each Tuesday and
Thursday morning and after school on
Fridays, Mr Hagiwara will ensure your
child’s fitness improves with a
breakfast or beach run. Touch Rugby for
Years 10 to 12 is just commencing and
the Hobby and Modelling group – although
small, is still active. I would like
to express my appreciation of the dedicated
staff who willingly give of their time
to make all of the above happen and assure
you that your student is most welcome
to become involved in any of the activities
or indeed make suggestions for new ones.
