KOLBECARE UPDATE
Recently, 17 Year 10 students assisted the Rockingham
Swimming Club with their swimming carnival at the
Warnbro Aqua Jetty. Mrs McRedmond, representing
the Club wrote to thank the College and the students.
She said, “Your students were a credit
to their school, willing to assist mature and capable.
We appreciated their help and will look to Kolbe
College when we hold our Sprint Carnival in March
2009.”
At present, four initiatives are being planned for
Year 10 KolbeCare: Club SNAP is conducted by the
Waikiki Community and Family Centre. The Club is
a programme of activities for children and young
people with varying levels of disabilities. It is
conducted every third Saturday from 1.00 pm to 4.00
pm. Some Year 10 students have expressed interest
in being part of the the programme. A small group
of students would like to set up a surfing activity
for young people with disabilities. Another group
of Year 10 students have expressed interest in setting
up a “ring pull collection” group. We
also hope to form a recycling group in Year 10 to
continue developing our awareness of the reasons
for recycling and also how we can do it more effectively.
HOT OFF THE PRESS!
LOURDESCARE, which is Our Lady of Lourdes Parish
version of KolbeCare, is looking for volunteers
to do some gardening for elderly parishioners who
are no longer physically able to do their own gardening.
Students who want to undertake this project should
contact one of the Lourdescare Duty Coordinators:
Sharren 9527 7325; Joan 9592 3883; Teresa 9527
5057.
LITURGICAL HIGHS
Over the last fortnight, we have celebrated the Feast
of Blessed Mary MacKillop (8 August) and the Feast
of the Assumption (15 August). Both liturgies were
memorable because of the sincere involvement of
our students. As they left the Sports Hall after
the Assumption Mass, they were handed rosary beads.
While some wore them as jewellery that day, at
least they were a visible reminder of the Church’s
tradition of meditating on the life of Jesus through
praying the Rosary. Each lunchtime leading up to
Kolbe Day, at 1.25 pm the Rosary will be prayed
in the Chapel.

ASH WEDNESDAY AND PROJECT COMPASSION
Ash Wednesday is the first
day of Lent. A day of reflection on
what needs to change in our lives as Christians.
On Ash Wednesday ashes are placed onto the
foreheads of the faithful in the sign of
the cross to remind them of Christ's death,
of the sorrow one should feel for his or
her sins, and of the necessity of repenting,
which is turning from sin and turning to
God. The ashes are obtained from burned palm
branches from the Palm Sunday of the previous
year.
Last week we celebrated Ash Wednesday with
the launch of Project Compassion and the blessing
and distribution of ashes in House Groups. Our
student leaders planned a ceremony for the
whole school and led everyone in the launch
of Project Compassion.
Project Compassion is a Lenten programme conducted
through Caritas Australia, the Catholic Church’s
aid agency. Each year the College makes
a donation to Caritas, the money coming from
fundraising activities organised by the students.
Celebrating these special events in house
groups is not only a wonderful opportunity
for staff and students to reflect on the Lenten
period but also to establish a sense of ‘House
Spirit’ .

A Model of Campus Ministry
James Fowler (1991) presents a model of the
life and mission of the Church that draws on
five aspects of the life of the early Church.
kerygma
the telling of the story of God’s self-disclosure
and self-giving (revelation)
leitourgia
the work of the people in worship
koinonia
the spiritual fellowship of the community of
faith
diakonia
service, mission, vocation in the world
paideia
becoming aware of the rules, of the grammar,
of Christian living in the contemporary world,
with an eye on the future and, ultimately, the
heavenly kingdom.
