Religious Education at Kolbe Catholic College
Kolbe Catholic College is a unique school in its eighteenth year of operation. From the start the story of the students and the story of the Gospels have intertwined to give meaning to their lives. In the Religious Education classes students are introduced to the content of their Faith whilst also learning how to put this Faith into practice.
In a Catholic school the ‘Bishop’s Mandate Letter’ states that “Religious Education is the first learning Area in the Catholic school curriculum”. At Kolbe Catholic College it is taken for granted that all students (Catholic or otherwise) will participate to the best of their ability in this area.
At Kolbe Catholic College we strive to follow the CECWA Policy Statement (2004) on Religious Education that states “Religious Education is a learning area which focuses on the knowledge and understanding of the Gospel as it is handed on by the Catholic Church to those who follow Christ in today’s world.”
The formal Religious Education Programs have been prepared in accordance with the Perth Archdiocesan Guidelines for Catholic schools for Years Eight to Twelve. All Catholic schools would follow a similar program.
As in other subjects there are assessments, essays, tests, etc. and students are expected to achieve a satisfactory grade according to their ability.
Prayer plays an important part in the faith life of a Catholic school and is said at the beginning of each Religious Education class. Students should know a range of prayers (traditional and modern) by the time they leave the College.
Students will be exposed to guest speakers and facilitators over their five years in the Religious Education classroom. These will be on varied topics and supplement the classroom teaching. There will also be opportunities for students to participate in classroom Liturgies and Reconciliation during the year.
