Banner

  • In the centre of the Xavier banner is an image of two hands holding up the world. This symbolises the missionary work that Francis Xavier and his followers undertook, throughout the world.
  • The vine represents the spread of the gospel and the book represents learning.
  • Our motto, “Christ is our destiny” is a reminder to seek Christ in everything we do.
  • The crab is taken from a story told by Xavier about the connection between the rosary, our faith and nature.

St Francis Xavier

Born: 1506 Died: 1552

St Francis Xavier studied and taught philosophy at the University of Paris. A friend of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, it was St Ignatius who convinced him to use his talents to spread the Gospel. He became one of the founding Jesuits and the first Jesuit missionary.

He was a missionary for ten years in India, the East Indies and Japan. His epic finds him dining with head-hunters, washing sores of lepers in Venice and teaching catechism to Indian children. Wherever he went he would seek out and help the poor and forgotten. He traveled thousands of miles, mostly on his bare feet.
