In 2008, Kolbe Music Camp returned to the beautiful
and historic Benedictine community of New Norcia.
Music-making was the focus of our time and rehearsals
began on the first night. As well as our large
concert and jazz bands; our guitar/bass, percussion,
keyboard, flute, vocal and brass ensembles spent
time together rehearsing or composing their own
pieces. This year's concert band is the largest
it has been for several years with 24 students
from years 8 to 12 combining to make a very impressive
sound. Jazz band continues to be very strong
and is working on a variety of new pieces in
different jazz styles. Holding music camp so
early in the year was a great way to "kick-off" our
ensembles and lays the foundation for further
success this year.
In addition to these musical experiences we
were able to take a guided tour of the town,
learning about its fascinating 160-year history.
We also had the privilege of joining the 9 remaining
monks for "Compline" (evening prayer)
in the Monestary Chapel. The extensive museum
provided a sample of the town's history including
artworks, clothing, musical instruments, school
equipment and much more dating from the 1840s
to recent times.
Our work culminated in a two-hour concert on
the final evening held in various venues throughout
St Gertrude's College including the spectacular
Chapel. The acoustics in this chapel have drawn
musicians from near and far to record their music.
The variety and quality of the performances were
a credit to the efforts of our musicians.
Students and staff alike were pleasantly surprised
that four very dedicated parents made the long
trip on a Tuesday night to join the audience.
Senior students in years 10, 11 and 12 showed
great leadership in both musical and non-musical
activities and were positive role-models throughout
the camp. The year 11 and 12 students planned
and ran a quiz night and led the singing in our
karaoke night to keep everyone entertained.
Thankyou to our music tutors who also made the
trip to support their students and of course
to Pat Branson, Ali Buckner, Kath Hunter and
Rose Mascaro. Without the efforts of all these
wonderful musicians the event would not have
been possible.
