SENIOR FOOTBALL TEAM - BELT UP CUP 08
MONDAY 4 August
This
year the senior football team participated in the
Belt Up Cup competition. For the second year running
we clinched the Peel Division, before once again
being knocked out in the semi finals by eventual
champions CBC Fremantle. The team was lead well by
the year 12 team members who all displayed excellent
leadership both on the field and at the early morning
training sessions. This was especially well demonstrated
by captains Phillip Pohlenz Saw and Sean O’Neil
as well as senior players Mitchell Ryan, Thomas
Boyes and Luke George.
The team won each match in the early stages of the
competition before being knocked out by 9 points
by CBC. One highlight of the season was the better
dedication to training than in previous seasons.
Unfortunately a lack of discipline by some of the
team members meant we went into the final against
CBC undermanned. Congratulations must go to Phillip
Pohlenz Saw who was chosen for the Belt Up Cup AFL
All-stars team and Ruban Pracas, a first time footballer
who was the best clubman. Other players who played
to a consistent high standard during the competition
were year 12’s Mitchell Ryan, Jackson Zilco,
Sean O’Neil and Cory Seldon, year 11’s
Liam McKenna, Aaron Heal, Cody Thompson and Thomas
Lynn and Year 10’s Dwayne Noronha.

YEAR 10 FOOTBALL
MONDAY 4 August
As there
is State wide Australian Rules Competition for Year
10’s during term two, a very keen
group of Year 10’s and a select few Year
9’s traveled to Lynwood-Ferndale Reserve
to participate in the annual ACC Sports Ready Cup.
Each team in this lightning carnival is required
to play three games and win at least two of them
to qualify for the final round held on the same
day.
Kolbe College received a tough draw in regard to
the fixtures and came up against some quality opposition
in All Saints College early in the day. Xavier Bochat
proved a live wire on the forward line kicking an
inspirational goal in the opening minutes of our
first game. This set the scene for a polished team
effort and confidence boosting victory.
In our second game Kolbe came from behind to almost
snatch victory away from Lake Joondalup Baptist College.
Thanks to tireless displays from Stephen Tudor, in
the ruck, and our mosquito fleet of Andrew Walsh,
Luke Robinson and Dwayne Noronha the scores were
level at the final siren.
In our third round match we were ‘out muscled’ by
the more experienced Mandurah Catholic College. Which
translated to our team narrowly missing the finals.
Best players on the day were Sam Barber, Michael
Triscari, Stephen Tudor, Jaye Collard and Dwayne
Noronha. I would like to thank the entire team for
their dedication to this event and ‘football
brains’ of Brent Hedley and Michael McCann.

YEAR 8 & 9 BELT UP CUP 08
MONDAY 4 August
Kolbe College again entered two teams into the Peel
Division a commitment undertaken by very few schools
in the state. There certainly was not a lack of
numbers in young men challenging for positions
in both teams as well as a cast of many staff providing
support for both teams.

Kolbe College II under the guidance of Mr Armitage
and Mr Galbraith set up their season well and appeared
on target for an undefeated qualifying series after
three very commanding performances. The final match
of the competition against Halls Head became an anticlimax,
as although if we won and remained undefeated, two
other teams with superior percentages and a similar
win loss ration would have progressed. This certainly
didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the team on
the day with the opposition proving three points
too good for us. Halls Head had won the Peel Division
in 2007 and similar to our performance of the previous
year we finished with a three win one loss ratio.
Two boys in particular were the team leaders and
play makers. Jaye Collard (captain) and Luke Robinson
were among the best two players in each match. Luke
was a terrier in the middle of the ground and was
always at the base of the packs. Jaye was polished
with skills on both sides of the body and always
tried his up most for the team success. Andrew Walsh,
Xavier Bochart and Jordan Testar, until injured were
others to show leadership and good form during the
season. Some of the younger members of the team had
their moments, with the standout being Jacob Goodrick.
Others to make a significant impact included Luke
Van Blommstein, Zac White and Blake Lee.

Kolbe College I was our developmental team and the
bulk of the team were year 8 boys with a small group
of year nines supporting the team. Mr Sciorill provided
support for the team on match days and with Mr McCann
looked after the early morning training sessions.
The team came of age in their final match recording
a stirring victory over Living Waters. There was
some great talent on display form the Year 8’s
including Joseph Burke, Jack Cooper and Aaron Ophurst.
The steadying influence and responsibilities were
carried in large by Daniel Abel, Chris Bilos and
Matthew Guy
As has become the tradition at Kolbe College over
the past few years a group of committed older students
supported the Junior Football program by providing
help with training, assisting on match days and umpiring
when required. Cody Thompson, Liam McKenna and Dwayne
Norohna are acknowledged for their support throughout
the season.

SENIOR GIRLS FOOTBALL
In 2008 the Kolbe Catholic College Senior Girls
Football team finished equal 3rd in the Smarter Than
Smoking School Girls Football Competition.
After winning 6 games in a row and finishing on
top of the Peel Division, the team defeated La Salle
College, Corpus Christi College and lost to Lake
Joondalup Baptist College by only 4 points in the
preliminary final.
Unfortunately we just missed out on playing in the
Grand Final, however, the team deserves high accolades
for the manner in which we supported and encouraged
each other. The team typified the College motto, “Faith
Courage Excellence” throughout the season.
An example of this was demonstrated when Beth Driscoll
who played in the match against Lake Joondalup with
a broken finger.
Most importantly we had a lot of fun and we have
the foundation of another strong team for 2009. Almost
a third of the team have attended selection trials
for the Peel Thunderbirds since the school competition
ended.
We say goodbye and thanks to our Year 12 players:
• Chelsea Randall (Captain)
• Tina Subotich
• Jessica Brailey
• Gemma Smith
Thanks to all the girls that played, the boys that
helped out at training and games, the staff that
coached, managed (A big thankyou to Mrs Donaldson)
or just came down and cheered for Kolbe throughout
the season.
A particular thanks to Mr Dyball for giving up his
time to coach and umpire.
This year we had four Year 8 students play and next
year we hope that more girls come and try out because
at Kolbe is becoming a force to be reckoned with
in Girls Football.

RUGBY REPORT
Friday 1
August
On Wednesday 23 July Kolbe played Aranmore
Catholic College in the Combined High School Rugby
Competition. The boys were very determined to make
amends for the loss in the Welborn Cup Final. It
was a very wet day and the conditions were not
suitable for our running game.
Despite the horrible weather, both teams played
a great game of rugby. The score was not high but
it was a titanic struggle. Aranmore were first
to score with a penalty. Kolbe then took control
of the game and with excellent forward play, put
Aranmore under enormous pressure. This lead to
a great try by Dylan Taylor converted by Marnus
Ferreira. This was the score for most of the game.
Aranmore managed to score in the second half to
lead 8-7. Kolbe retaliated and had a great opportunity
to score with an open try line but a drop ball
saw the end of that chance. Against the run of
play Aranmore managed to break our tight defence
and scored another try to lead 13-7. A determined
Kolbe tried to convert a try with 5 minutes left
to play and control possession. In the dying minutes
we had a chance with a 3 over lap to get the points
but our execution let us down. Aranmore turned
the ball over to sound the end of the match. Aranmore
winning the game 13-7. The Kolbe boys should be
proud of themselves in the way they played and
ended their official season.
The
Kolbe Open Boys V St. John’s
Due to age issues we could not play this touring
side from the UK with our regular 1st XV. We had
to invite our players from last year back to make
a Barbarian side of Kolbe Boys. The opposition
had a big pack of forwards who played hard and
aggressive. The game of rugby is of such a nature
that size is not always a deciding factor. Our
forwards proved this by out scrumming and mauling
the UK boys. We answered their aggressive play,
which unsettled the opposition.
Kolbe scored with two penalties by Marnus Ferreira
one from nearly the halfway line to lead 6 -0 at
half time. In the second half Josh Hanson scored
a try after a magnificent break by C.J van der
Linde. The support play was great and Josh rounded
off a with a great move. Marnus converted to lead
by 13 –7.
St John’s never gave up and in the dying
minutes scored a try for their 5 points. The boys
showed true grit playing 2 hard games in two consecutive
games.
U/16
The Years 10 and 11 boys combined into
a team to play the U/16 side of St John. It was
the first time they played together as a team.
It was a very physical game with St. John’s
being victorious, winning the game 15-14.
The boys played well and some great driving play
by the forwards lead to their two tries. They mauled
St John’s for nearly 10 metres on each occasion.
The first try being awarded to Will Stevenson and
the second to Eric Hannsen.
This was the end of a long season for the open
boys. An excellent season winning 12 of the 13
games in South Africa and reaching the finals in
the Welborn Cup. They only lost 3 games out of
the 20 games played this year. One could say it
was the most successful season in Kolbe history.
The raw talent in this year’s U/16 side makes
for a promising 2009 Open team campaign.
