Creativity & Craftsmanship

Verena Smallman (Head of Visual Arts) & Jeremy Powell (Head of Technologies)

It’s been a vibrant and award-filled few weeks in the Kolbe Art and Technologies Department! To close out the term, we’ve celebrated major success at the Kwinana Industries Council Youth Art Awards and embraced all things creative during our World Art Week celebrations.

Our talented Visual Art, Design, Wood, and Metal students stole the spotlight at the KIC Youth Art Awards Opening Night at the Gary Holland Centre. In an evening showcasing incredible talent from across 11 schools, Kolbe students proudly walked away with 9 awards! A truly proud moment for both the Technologies and Visual Art learning areas.

Kolbe Winners include:

  •  Blake Wiltschut (2024 Graduate) – Metalwork (Functional) Winner
  •  Gabriele (Year 12) – Metalwork (Functional) Highly Commended
  • Perry (Year 11) – Design & Technology (Innovative Use of Materials) Winner

  •  Theane (Year 12) – 3D Art Winner
  •  Isabella (Year 12) – 3D Art Runner-Up
  •  Olivia (Year 11) – 3D Art Highly Commended

These exceptional results reflect not only our students’ skill and creativity but also the strength and growth of our Art and Technologies programs.

The Technology Department at Kolbe continues to thrive, with over 200 students from Years 10–12 enrolled in Woodwork, Metalwork, and Design. In addition, 80 students are currently undertaking certificates and pre-apprenticeships courses at TAFE – gaining real-world skills that are opening doors to careers in high-demand trades. Whether it’s crafting furniture, welding functional pieces, or exploring design innovations, Kolbe students are creating with purpose.

Meanwhile, in the Visual Arts, World Art Week turned the campus into a celebration of all things imaginative.  Kolbe celebrated World Art Week in Week 9 with art quizzes, interesting fun facts, and “ARTsome” hands-on activities in the WLC. Olivia (Year 11) said, “I loved getting involved in all the World Art Week fun – it made the whole school feel more creative!”

With award-winning achievements and a joyful celebration of creativity, it’s clear that the arts are alive and thriving at Kolbe. Whether it’s designing in the workshop, sculpting in the studio, or diving into a quirky art fact, our students continue to impress with their talent, passion, and curiosity. Congratulations to all our award winners and participants – your creativity inspires us all!
