On Thursday 29 May, our Year 10 Visual Arts and Media Arts students stepped out of the classroom and into the cultural heart of Perth for a full day of hands-on learning, creative inspiration, and artistic discovery.
The adventure began with a vibrant street art walking tour, where students wandered through the colourful laneways of the city, taking in striking murals and graffiti masterpieces. With cameras in hand, they used the urban landscape as a canvas for their own street photography — capturing moments rich in colour, texture and story.
A standout moment of the morning was an unexpected meet-and-greet with local street artist Ketones6000, who was in the middle of creating a new piece. He paused to speak with the students, offering insights into his process and passion. As Giacomo, one of our budding Visual Arts students, reflected:
“An art piece doesn’t need to be in a museum to be considered a masterpiece.”
After a quick lunch break, the Visual Arts group continued their cultural deep dive with visits to two of the city’s most celebrated exhibitions — The Lester Prize at the WA Museum and Pulse Perspectives at the Art Gallery of WA. Both showcases featured thought-provoking works by young and emerging artists from across the state.
“It helped fuel my creativity and inspire me for the artwork I’m about to create,” said Sienna.
While the Visual Arts students explored galleries, our Media Arts students headed to North Metro TAFE’s Creative Industries campus, where they got a behind-the-scenes look at the world of film production. They observed a film shoot in progress, toured industry-standard facilities, and spoke with a special effects lecturer about the many career paths in screen media.
“It helped me gain insight into the industry and it was really interesting to see all of the different roles on a film set,” shared Ellie.
By the end of the day, students returned buzzing with ideas and creative energy. Emmy summed up the experience beautifully:
“The art tour was very inspiring and showed the culture of Aboriginal and local WA people.”
Whether snapping photos in hidden laneways, standing in awe before powerful portraits, or stepping into the world of screen production, students were given a valuable opportunity to connect with Perth’s thriving creative scene — and left with fresh perspectives and renewed inspiration
