On the first day of Term 4, all Kolbe staff had the opportunity to serve local organisations as a way of living out our Catholic faith and following the example of service modelled by Jesus. Staff visited and assisted at charities associated with some of our College Houses, such as Wheelchairs for Kids and The Crew, as well as charities and organisations in the College’s local vicinity, including St. Bernadette’s Catholic Parish, Vinnies, Baldivis Children’s Forest, and the Frank Konecny Centre.
Ms Lisa Dann, who served at the Frank Konecny Centre, reflected: “Today was a nice reminder of my family members who always helped me when I was younger. I always try to give back to my family at Christmas, and today was a timely reminder of those who go without at this time of year.”
Mr Matthews, who assisted at Vinnies, said of the day: “It was a valuable experience to give to the community; helping at Vinnies made me realise how simple it can be to make a meaningful contribution to others.” The day also included a staff gathering for lunch, where they shared a meal and connected over their experiences.
Miss Ylenia Russo was part of a group of staff who cooked meals for community groups: “I feel that serving food shows love, and in his time, Jesus used food as a way of serving others. It felt good to replicate this in a small way.”
The purpose of the day was brought together through a meaningful liturgy in the College Chapel to conclude. Staff read from scripture, reflecting on the ultimate service of Jesus and contemplating the many ways we can continue to serve God and others beyond this day.
