Kinship in Rice

David New (Rice House Coordinator)

Rice House gathered in Week 5 to formally welcome Our Year 7’s to Rice House. Known as our ‘Kinship Ceremony’ , Year 7’s were welcomed by their House Captains Mackenzie and Ronan (Year 12).

The Captains introduced the House theme for 2025 – Rise and Inspire! They emphasised the importance of friendship and a sense of belonging in their Pastoral Care groups.

“Rise and Inspire” isn’t just a theme — it’s a call to action. Like Edmund, you are called to rise above challenges, step out of your comfort zones, and inspire kindness, courage, and excellence in everything you do.

In Rice House, we look out for one another. We lift each other up. We stand for what’s right, even when it’s hard. And most importantly, we lead with heart — just like Edmund did.

The ceremony ended with the traditional ‘tap-in’ on The Carey Gavel named in honour of Br. Patrick Carey cfc, Kolbe’s foundation principal and importantly a Christian Brother in the tradition of Blessed Edmund Rice.

Every Rice House student participates in this ceremony which is then replicated in Year 12 at their last House assembly on graduation day, where they ‘tap-out’ as we farewell our Riceans from the College.
