Kolbe’s Mathematicians Have SUM Fun

Giulio Gerace (Math Teacher)

On the Friday nights of Weeks 4 and 5, seven teams from Years 7 to 12 proudly represented Kolbe Catholic College in the prestigious Have Sum Fun Mathematics Quiz Night. Held at various venues across the Peel region—Mandurah Catholic College for Years 9-10, Frederick Irwin Anglican School for Years 11-12, and Rockingham Senior High School for Years 7-8—our students put their problem-solving skills to the test against some of the brightest young mathematicians in the area.

Each team, consisting of six students, tackled eight challenging mathematical problems over four intense rounds. With fierce competition and high stakes, our students delivered outstanding performances and demonstrated remarkable teamwork and perseverance.

Our Year 7-8 team competed well but did not place. The Year 9-10 teams all performed strongly, with one team securing an impressive second-place finish. Meanwhile, our Year 11-12 teams dominated the competition, claiming both first and second place—a truly remarkable achievement.

Reflecting on the event, Year 10 student Panvinya shared, “It was a challenging but rewarding experience, and our team ended up taking 2nd place!” Year 11 student Archer found the event both educational and enjoyable, stating, “Very fun experience and learned some new things.” Fellow Year 11 student Eli appreciated the opportunity to engage with students from other schools, saying, “Great to meet students from other schools and test our math skills.” Macey, also in Year 11, echoed this sentiment, adding, “A great way to test our knowledge and make new friends!” Meanwhile, senior student Noah reflected on the challenge and the learning experience, commenting, “I found Have Sum Fun to be challenging but a fun experience. I learnt about some mathematical processes and got the opportunity to work with people I hadn’t worked with before.”

A huge congratulations to all our participants for their dedication, hard work, and enthusiasm! Their achievements are a testament to their mathematical skills and collaborative spirit. Well done to all students who took part, and we look forward to even greater success in future competitions!
