Learning the ropes

Monique Munro (Workplace Learning Administrator)

This term, more than eighty Year 11 students headed out into the workplace for two weeks of hands-on industry experience with a host employer of their choice. For most of the group it was their second opportunity for work placement this year, however for others it was their very first chance at getting into the world of work.

Students attended a wide range of workplaces, from trades and construction, education, hospitality, aquaculture, fashion, healthcare and tourism, to name only a few! College staff members enjoyed visiting the students during their placements to see them in action; Mrs Grosser explained “After teaching my Futures students in the classroom this Semester, it was great to see them out in the real world, putting what we’ve learnt into practice. The students seemed so confident and efficient in the workplace, it was like they were ‘real’ employees!”

From taking patient blood pressure at a healthcare centre, measuring fish at the Department of Aquaculture, cutting fabrics for a fashion designer or running small group lessons in the classroom, it was fantastic to see our students excel. “I can’t believe I got to work with real patients in the clinic. I enjoyed the experience so much, it’s really solidified my goals towards becoming a Nurse” reflected one student.

Our students were so impressive in the workplace that many were granted further opportunities, including part time employment and even apprenticeship offers. We are so proud of our young people for going out into the workplace with eagerness, rising to the challenges of their placements, and upholding the strong reputation of the College. Our thanks goes out to all host employers for graciously accepting our students and affording them these real world opportunities – without their generosity the WPL program could not go ahead.
