In Week 1, a group of 62 Year 10 students and 8 staff took part in an eye-opening event aimed at raising awareness about homelessness. We spent the night sleeping in cardboard boxes on the Avenue, simulating the harsh realities faced by those without stable housing.
Following a cold night under the stars, we were huddled in our sleeping bags, trying to catch some last-minute sleep, when the unexpected activation of sprinklers jolted us to attention – reminding us of the discomfort that many experience daily.
This experience was both challenging and enlightening. It helped us develop a deeper understanding of homelessness and the importance of empathy and support for those in need. Many of us came away with new perspectives on this issue.
One student, Mia, shared, “Sleeping outside in a cardboard box really made me appreciate the comforts of home. It was uncomfortable, but it opened my eyes to what others go through every day.”
Jake, reflected, “The experience taught me that we often take our basic needs for granted. It’s crucial to lend a helping hand to those who are struggling.”
As a group, we raised over $3,500 for LifeLink. Overall, this event strengthened our commitment to compassion and community support, reminding us that even small acts of kindness can make a significant difference.
