Rice House Day

David New – Rice House Coordinator

Rice House gathered in the College Chapel to celebrate their patron, Blessed Edmund Rice. The mass centred on the themes of faith, family and compassion. Pastoral Care groups presented their symbols which highlighted their PC themes and values. Fr. Vijay, in his homily, asked the House to match Blessed Edmunds values with action for others less fortunate. Mass commentator Judd emphasised the charisms of Blessed Edmund in his opening and the importance of community.

“Today was a great reminder of the core values and principles that Edmund Rice followed, and the ways in which we strive to live our lives. It was great seeing everyone in our community enjoying the food and activities like volleyball.”

House Captain’s Isidora and Thomas emphasised Edmund’s life and legacy in their final message highlighting the Rice House motto and the importance of doing the ‘little things’ for others and that God sees all people as equals and sees even the smallest acts of kindness and compassion. They also reflected on the significance of the day for their fellow Year 12’s.

”It was special for us being our last Rice House Day and the fact that we are so close to graduating. This was another opportunity to come together and celebrate in the spirit of Edmund Rice.”

Year 7 student Imogen commented on the great spirit of the day amongst students.
“I think it was a great success. It was fun to hang out with other people. I also loved learning about Edmund Rice and seeing who he was and what he achieved. The activities were so great because there was so much to do. It was the best time ever. I am so excited for many more memories and even more excited for next year!”

Overall, the day stressed the significance of our House patron, Edmund Rice whose acts of kindness towards poor Irish boys 200 years ago has stood the test of time and whose schools now number nearly 700 worldwide. Many thanks to the Staff and Student Leaders who helped make the day such a great success.
