On 19 November, Kolbe Catholic College welcomed children’s book author and illustrator James Foley for an exciting Year 7 incursion. Foley, best known for his creative collaborations and quirky storytelling, spent the morning sharing insights into one of his illustrated works, My Dead Bunny, created alongside author Sigi Cohen.
Right from the start, students were captivated. As Paige later reflected, “the incursion was really beneficial for all those who are inspired by the author’s illustrations, and it was a time where we could learn and look into something new and creative.” Her words perfectly summed up the buzz in the room as Foley walked students through the full journey of illustrating a book—from early planning and character sketches to the final polished designs.
Foley demonstrated the different colouring and drawing techniques he uses to bring stories to life, giving students a rare behind-the-scenes look at the creative decisions illustrators make. Theodore shared how impactful this was, describing the visit as “such an impeccable and inspirational moment… learning about how he illustrates, his art techniques and all his books he wrote. It really was a memorable blast!”
One message that resonated deeply with the students was Foley’s reminder that:
“Everyone that reads knows the importance of requiring room for the reader to use their creativity.”
This idea brought home just how intentional illustrators must be when balancing detail with imagination.
Inspired and energised, the Year 7 students are now ready to dive into their next English unit—creating picture books of their own. If Foley’s visit was any indication, they’ll be bringing plenty of creativity, curiosity and new techniques to the task.
