Brainpower at OzCLO

Lei (Year 10 Student)

On Wednesday, March 5th, 16 GATE kids came together in 4 groups to participate in ‘The Australian Computational and Linguistics Olympiad’, otherwise known as OzCLO. We had 2 new upcoming teams competing, trying to rise to the challenge, and 2 Ex-GATE Year 10 teams, one of which made it to the National Level last year. We were excited to see what was in store for us and the other teams!

Rachannie (Year 10) reflected on the experience saying,“OzCLO was a fun way to connect with my peers challenging our problem solving skills.”

We were challenged to decipher many different languages from the Cherokee language in The United States to the Waanyi Language from Northern Queensland. We put our brains together and knuckled down for the challenge. Languages with different scripts, different grammar and so many different rules! How could we possibly overcome these problems?!

The day was filled with intense problem-solving, as the sounds of markers and pens echoed throughout the rooms. These intense 2 hours went by in a flash and at the end everyone was frantically finishing their answers. Michael (Year 10) said similarities and differences,” and it was truly rewarding to work together, thinking critically and creatively.  After a lot of discarded papers, lolly wrappers and heavy discussions, the day finally ended with the competitors nervously anticipating their results over a slice of well-earned pizza.

Kris Lightly (GATE Teacher) looked back on the experience saying  “I was very proud of the focus and collegiality of all 4 Kolbe OzCLO 2025 teams.” Everyone gave their best effort, demonstrating teamwork, determination, and a passion for linguistic puzzles. We can’t wait to see what next year brings!
