Climbing Adventures

David Walker (Head of Health and Physical Education

This week, Kolbe’s four Outdoor Education classes embarked on an exhilarating journey to Dwellingup’s Lane Poole Reserve to tackle the high ropes Tree Tops Adventure course. The adventure also included a stop at the Mandurah Indoor Rock Climbing Gym, providing a comprehensive culmination to our term unit on roping and climbing.

Students put into practice the skills they learned throughout the term, including top-rope climbing, belaying for a partner, attaching harnesses and carabiners, and demonstrating proper climbing techniques for assessment. However, the most important skills emphasised were safety, common sense, trust, and communication. These were standout elements of the day, fostering a bonding experience among students, especially as they prepare for next term’s expedition.

Outdoor Education is more about personal development than recreational activities. These activities are fun but also serve as challenges that help students learn about themselves, appreciate others, and enjoy and preserve nature.

Reflections from Students:

Leaf:
“I leave behind my fear of heights and I also ‘left no trace’ of rubbish or damage to the environment.”

Stick:
“The mental and physical fitness required for climbing really stuck with me. It’s exhausting, tough on your arms, but exciting and a real good workout.”

Rock:
“The whole group rocked! We all did awesome, supporting each other and never gave up… even the teachers, on the ultra-black [most difficult level] ropes course!!”

“The speed-climbing rock wall at the indoor gym was the best. Everyone got so competitive, trying to get the fastest time. I think it was 4.5 seconds to the top!!”

The combination of these activities not only challenged students physically but also helped them develop crucial life skills and foster a deeper sense of community and environmental stewardship.
