During Weeks 4–5 this term, more than eighty Year 11 students stepped out of the classroom and into the workforce, taking part in two weeks of hands-on industry experience with a host employer of their choice. For many, it was their second work placement of the year; for others, it was their very first chance to experience the world of work.
Students were welcomed into an impressive range of industries across the metro area and even regional WA — from trades and construction to education, hospitality, aquaculture, fashion, healthcare, and tourism. College staff enjoyed visiting students on-site to see them in action. As Mr Bunn shared,
“After teaching my Futures students in the classroom this Semester, it was great to see them out in the real world, putting what we’ve learnt into practice. The students seemed so confident in the workplace — it was like they were ‘real’ employees!”
Across the fortnight, students took on meaningful tasks that gave them genuine insight into future pathways. From shadowing electricians on residential sites, and assisting tourism operators by preparing equipment and handing out wetsuits on snorkelling charters, to supporting teachers with reading groups in primary classrooms — it was fantastic to see our students excel, learn new skills, and most importantly, enjoy themselves.
Students reflected positively on their experiences, with one sharing, “seeing what an electrician actually does on-site has helped me understand the trade so much better.” Another added, “working with kids in a primary school confirmed that teaching is definitely the path I want to pursue.”
Many students made such a strong impression that they were offered ongoing opportunities, including part-time employment and even four apprenticeships.
