Message from our Principal

At our recent College Assembly, our Student Executive members launched the theme for the Student Leadership Team for 2023. Titled ‘U and I in Unity’, our students focused on the need for everyone to come together to support others in their time of need. This is such a beautiful message, selected by our students themselves, that typifies why it is so special to be a member of this community. What the students identified so beautifully in their address was that it is often the small things that we do for others that have the biggest impact.

During my chat to the assembly, which followed our Student Executive Address, I played the below clip which I thought exemplified their theme in action. This 30 second exchange of words by a young man who saw his teammate upset and in need of love and support, demonstrates everything we believe about The Kolbe Way. Watching a young lad default to such a selfless act was inspiring for everyone in our assembly – students and staff alike.

Our students are developing in a society that often prioritses achievement, accolades and short-term gratification. We know that this does not allow a focus on happiness and wellbeing. It is by giving that our students (and adults) can find genuine fulfillment. The Dalai Lama said:

It is under the greatest adversity that there exists the greatest potential for doing good, both for oneself and others”.

This is such an important message for our children – that often when times are difficult or they are struggling to find their way, giving to others can provide a spark which sets them back on track. Based on the number of students who participated in our Caritas Walk for Water Challenge – where nearly 100 students and staff walked together for 3 kilometers carrying a bucket of water to simulate a daily routine for those in some third world countries – I think our students understand that positive wellbeing can be found in many selfless places.

During this time of Lent, I ask that you continue to support this message with your children – to find ways to bring love, joy and peace to the lives of others, especially to you!
