Celebrating Growth Through Challenge
I have been reminded again over the past few weeks of the extraordinary growth that occurs when young people are given space to step forward, attempt something difficult, and discover what they are capable of. They often display the College’s value of Courage as they regularly step outside their comfort zone and accept the challenges placed before them. As educators and parents, we know that challenge is essential for growth, yet in today’s world it can be tempting to smooth the path rather than let our children walk it.
At Kolbe we aim to provide a safe and nurturing space where we at times step back so that our students can step up. Our parents play such an integral role in this pursuit. It is most humbling and an honour that parents entrust us in supporting their children to try, stumble and try again. This is a gift that cannot be overstated.
It reminds me of works of Dr Tim Elmore who through his research, identifies four common traps of modern parenting. We risk too little, we rescue too quickly, we rave too often and reward too easily. When we fall into these patterns children miss the chance to build resilience, responsibility and the deep sense of accomplishment that comes from overcoming challenges.
Over the past few weeks, we have witnessed the fruits of young people who have chosen courage over comfort. Our Year 12 students graduated proudly, maturely and with a strong sense of who they are becoming. They, along with our Year 9, 10, and 11 students completed their respective exams and workplace learning experiences.
Over the coming weeks, challenges will continue to shape our community. Our Year 9 students will embark on the much anticipated TKW Week which includes a two-day Rite of Passage experience, community service opportunities and faith based retreat. It is one of the highlights of the school year and an important expression of our commitment to forming young people of character who show courage in the face of the unknown.
Our Year 8 students will complete their Build Projects and our Year 7 students will participate in their 2026 Transition Day. We will also welcome our newest cohort of Year 7s for Orientation.
Each of these experiences is intentionally designed to stretch students within a safe and supported the environment so that confidence, independence and courage can grow. May we, in these final weeks, continue to create conditions in which our young people rise to the challenges put before them, taking responsibility for their own next steps.
