On Tuesday 18 September, our Year 8, 11 and 12 student leaders joined more than 1,200 students and teachers from 60 schools at the Zero2Hero In Your Head Conference at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre. With a further 387 students joining online from regional schools and more than 25 youth organisations represented, the day was a powerful reminder that wellbeing is something we build together.
For our student leaders, the conference was more than learning about mental health. It was an opportunity to explore what it means to lead with empathy, courage and compassion. As a Catholic community, we are called to recognise the dignity and worth of every person, to notice those around us and to have the courage to reach out when someone may need support.
“I was surprised by how many other young people experience similar struggles and thoughts. It made me realise that you can never really know what someone else is going through just by looking at them.” – Amelie, Year 8
Throughout the day, students heard inspiring stories from guest speakers Melissa Wu, Dr Kyle Hoath, Lily Gresele and Chad Aziz, before taking part in dynamic breakout sessions exploring areas of wellbeing including mindful movement, the art of difficult conversations and mind over media.
The conference challenged our students to consider how they can use their influence as leaders to help create a College culture where people feel seen, valued, connected and supported
“Zero2Hero was an amazing experience, with great people and an overall amazing vibe.” – Charlotte, Year 8
Our students returned with new strategies, fresh perspectives and an important message to carry into our community: looking after our own wellbeing and the wellbeing of others is an important part of how we live, lead and care for one another.
