Pi Week 2026 at Kolbe Catholic College was an exciting, school‑wide celebration of mathematics, creativity, and student leadership, and it all began with one simple classroom question:
“Miss, when is Pi Day? Are we doing something like last year?”
From that moment, four passionate Year 11 students, Keira, Bella, Ella, and Sophie, stepped up, volunteered their time, and took the lead in planning, organising, and delivering Pi Week as part of their Kolbe Care Hours. Their leadership resulted in a week filled with hands‑on, adventurous activities that brought maths to life across classrooms, the Maths Block, and the WLC.
Students across year levels eagerly took part in Pi‑Trivia quizzes, the Pi True/False challenge, and the ever‑popular Pi‑Bee Recitation Competition. Year 11 students Zachary and Kieran described the trivia as “extremely exuberating and enjoyable… something fresh and new to do for Pi Day.” Similarly, Jett (Year 11) shared, “I loved participating in the Pi Day quiz… the highlight was the Pi Day poster and spending time learning about Pi with my classmates.”
A brand‑new highlight this year was the Pi‑Day Relay, where Year 10 students raced through 16 challenging maths problems in teams. The relay blended strategic thinking, speed, and teamwork. Year 10 student Luis reflected on the experience, saying, “The Pi Day relay was an engaging, fun activity that really put our problem‑solving skills to the test. I really enjoyed navigating the relay with my friends, and it really strengthened my passion for math.”
The week also encouraged deeper mathematical exploration. Year 8 student Alyanna noted, “By using our calculators and solving different equations, we explored numbers bigger and smaller than Pi, which helped us understand this special number even more!”
One of the most visually striking moments was the Human‑Pi creation, where approximately 265 students and teachers gathered to form a giant Pi symbol. Liam (Year 11) described it as “a fun and creative break from our normal mathematics lessons.”
Pi Week 2026 truly demonstrated the power of student initiative, creativity, and collaboration. Congratulations to our outstanding Year 11 organisers, Keira, Bella, Ella, and Sophie, for transforming a simple question into an unforgettable celebration of learning at Kolbe.
