Creativity On Tour

Verena Smallman and Eryn Sharp – Visual and Media Arts Teachers

Year 10 Visual and Media Arts students travelled to the city on Monday 25 May for an excursion focused on Perth’s creative industries and culture.

The day began with a campus tour of SAE University College Perth, where Media students were introduced to future pathways in media, screen production, audio, animation and design. This provided valuable insight into potential careers within the creative industries and the skills required to succeed in these fields.

Visual Arts students then visited the Art Gallery of Western Australia to experience the 2026 Pulse Perspectives exhibition. The exhibition showcased outstanding Year 12 ATAR and General Visual Arts student work from across Western Australia, offering inspiration and a high standard of contemporary student practice.

All students participated in a guided street art walking tour through Perth’s laneways. Students photographed murals and public artworks while learning about the artists behind them, the stories they communicate and the role of street art in shaping the city’s culture and identity. The tour also explored the history of Perth, the purpose of commissioned works and the ways artists use style, colour and design to convey meaning.

The excursion provided students with valuable inspiration for their next media or art project, encouraging them to explore new themes, materials and conceptual approaches within their own creative practice, while also developing a deeper appreciation of the city as a living gallery.

Media student Taj reflected, “The excursion helped me see parts of Perth I’d never noticed before, especially the hidden laneways and the stories behind the street art.”

“One of the most interesting things I learned was how Perth uses street art to build culture and community instead of removing it,” fellow student Orion noted.

The experience encouraged students to see Perth through a more creative lens and connect classroom learning with real-world artistic practice.
