Kolbe Catholic College’s Maths Department transformed classrooms and common spaces into a hub of mathematical excitement as we celebrated Pi Week! The event was packed with interactive activities designed to spark curiosity, challenge minds, and showcase the fun side of mathematics.
One of the most spectacular moments of the week was the Human-Pi Formation, where an incredible 314 students and staff gathered in the Avenue to form the digits of π (Pi). This breathtaking display turned an abstract mathematical concept into a powerful visual, symbolising the unity and enthusiasm of our school community. Seeing students and staff come together to bring mathematics to life in such a creative and large-scale way was an unforgettable experience!
Pavinyasre (Year 10) couldn’t have summarised the day better, saying, “I really enjoyed the Pi Day—a great mix of challenge and fun!”
Another thrilling highlight was the Pi-Bee Competition, a high-stakes challenge that tested students’ memory, focus, and determination. The atmosphere was electric as participants took the stage, pushing themselves to recall as many digits of Pi as possible—all from memory! With every number recited, the tension grew as competitors showcased their incredible recall abilities. In a jaw-dropping performance, Elise (Year 10) claimed victory, flawlessly reciting an astounding 140 digits of Pi! It was a record-breaking moment that left everyone in awe, proving that mathematics isn’t just about numbers—it’s about passion, perseverance, and pushing beyond limits.
Lauren (Year 10) shared her excitement saying, “It was a fun challenge that allowed us to extend our knowledge while working together and enjoying some friendly competition.”
Sanjay (Year 10) also added, “The Pi Quiz Day was a blast! We didn’t do the best, but we gave it a good crack!”
To top off the celebrations, Pi Day was marked with the sharing of delicious pies among students and staff. The perfect blend of food and mathematics made for a fun and tasty way to honour this special day!
Throughout the week, Maths lessons were filled with engaging Pi-themed activities, from exploring the significance of Pi in real-world applications to solving creative Pi-Day quizzes and participating in hands-on challenges. These activities brought mathematics to life in such a fun way.
