Our Ash Wednesday Liturgy marked the beginning of Lent, calling us to reflection, conversion, and service. As Pilgrims of Hope in this Jubilee Year, we are invited to deepen our faith and stand with those in need.
This was also the launch of Project Compassion, Caritas Australia’s campaign to Unite Against Poverty. Brielle, one of Our Year 9 Leaders, shared, “It’s a reminder to reflect on how fortunate we are to have access to essentials like education, food, and water—basic needs that enable us to thrive.”
Through prayer, scripture, and the ashes, which were distributed by our Year 12 Leaders, we reflected on how we can respond to this call. Bianca, another of Our Year 9 Leaders, reminded us, “Lent is not just about giving things up but a season of transformation, where small acts of love and devotion bring us closer to Christ.”
Oliver (Year 9)reflected that, “The liturgy highlighted Pope Francis’ message about being ‘Pilgrims of Hope’ and how we must be grateful for our basic needs, while others in the world struggle.”
As we continue our Lenten journey, may we embrace hope, walk in solidarity, and act with compassion—choosing to make a difference in the lives of others.
In addition to the Ash Wednesday Liturgy, a group of Year 9 students attended the Project Compassion online launch on Shrove Tuesday. Maria reflected, “The Project Compassion launch was an incredible experience to truly understand what Project Compassion is all about. We brainstormed ideas on how the College could fundraise to help this amazing charity, and we hope to help all those who are going through a struggling time.” Phoebe reinforced the mission of Caritas, stating, “During Lent, Caritas focuses on helping people in need through Project Compassion. They encourage people to donate, pray, and take action to support vulnerable communities around the world.”
The students enjoyed pancakes together while learning about how their contributions could support the most vulnerable communities around the world. This experience inspired them to act with greater compassion and generosity this Lenten season.
All students and staff at Kolbe are encouraged to be the best version of themselves this Lent as we strive to go close to God. I look forward to working with the Year 9 Leaders and some of their peers to keep the flame of hope alive this Lenten season.
