Forty-six enthusiastic students from Kolbe Catholic College swapped their holiday sleep-ins for scarves and suitcases as they set off on the ninth College HASS Tour during the July break. Braving the winter chill, the group kicked off Week 1 with a trip packed full of snow, national landmarks, and unforgettable adventures.
The tour began on a magical note at Selwyn, where students were greeted by sparkling snow-covered slopes. For many, it was their first experience with snow—and they made the most of it. From tobogganing down hills and crafting snow angels to building snowmen and launching playful snowball battles, the day was filled with joy, laughter, and new memories.
After the snow came the civics, as the group headed to Canberra to explore the political heart of Australia. The itinerary was both busy and enriching. Students visited the National Museum of Australia, the Museum of Australian Democracy, Parliament House, Government House, the Electoral Education Centre, and the Australian War Memorial—each offering insight into our nation’s story, values, and democratic process.
But it wasn’t all business—there was plenty of time for fun too. Highlights included racing down Embassy Drive in go karts and lighting up the arena in a few rounds of laser tag.
After a guided tour of the Australian Institute of Sport, it was off to Sydney to check out the city and its many sights. With accommodation nestled in The Rocks, students had front-row views of the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House. Many embraced the challenge of climbing to the top of the Harbour Bridge, rewarded with panoramic views of the city, while others held tight on the ThunderThrill Jet Boats as they zipped across the harbour in an adrenaline-filled ride.
Thank you to the Australian Government, who recognise the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government contributed funding of $510 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs, helping to make this experience more accessible for families.
The 2025 HASS Tour was more than just a school trip—it was an unforgettable journey through Australia’s past, present, and future. And judging by the snowmen, the debates, and the harbour thrills, it’s safe to say that Kolbe’s young citizens came home a little colder, a lot wiser, and full of stories to tell.
