Last week, 30 Kolbe students travelled to Sydney and Newcastle to participate in the Junior Theatre Festival (JTF) Australia 2026, the largest celebration of youth musical theatre in the country. We were incredibly proud to be the only school representing Western Australia, showcasing our production of Beauty and the Beast JR. alongside schools from across the nation.
The festival was an unforgettable experience filled with performance, learning, friendship and inspiration. Our students had the opportunity to perform a selection from Beauty and the Beast JR. before panels of international theatre professionals and adjudicators. We were thrilled to receive outstanding feedback on our performance, including praise from one of the writers responsible for the Beauty and the Beast JR. adaptation. The cast’s hard work and dedication were recognised with the prestigious Outstanding Vocals Award, a remarkable achievement at a national event of this calibre.
The tour offered so much more than just performance opportunities. Students immersed themselves in Australia’s vibrant performing arts industry through a behind-the-scenes tour of the Sydney Opera House, a workshop at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA), and a musical theatre workshop with the Australian Youth Theatre (AYT). They also enjoyed seeing the acclaimed musical Six, providing further inspiration and insight into professional theatre.
Beyond the stage, students explored some of Australia’s most iconic locations, including walking tours of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, The Rocks, and the Royal Botanic Gardens. On our final day, we enjoyed a stunning walk through Sculpture by the Sea, travelling from Bronte Beach to Bondi Beach and taking in the incredible artworks displayed along the coastline.
While the awards and achievements were certainly highlights, the true value of the tour was found in the friendships formed, the confidence gained, and the memories created. Students connected with fellow performers from across Australia, embraced new challenges, and returned home with a renewed passion for the performing arts.
The experience was truly life-changing for many of our students and one that they will carry with them for years to come. We are incredibly proud of the way they represented Kolbe with enthusiasm, professionalism and excellence every step of the way. Their success is a testament to the talent, dedication and spirit that exists within our Performing Arts community.
