KCC Athletics Carnival

David Walker (Head of Health and Physical Education)

Week 2 was full of excitement and energy when the annual KCC Athletics Carnival events unfolded. On Tuesday afternoon, our Year 7 students had a go at High Jump to qualify for the main competition at Friday’s Carnival. The atmosphere was electric, setting the stage for the Year 12 High Jump event the following morning. Despite the persistent drizzle making conditions slippery, the female competitors managed to secure their places on the podium. However, the male competition ended on a suspenseful note, with the top 4 boys set to compete for the title at Friday’s Carnival.

On Thursday our 1500m and 400m runners lit-up the track on a cold evening at our Twilight Carnival. It was damp and soft underfoot, but that didn’t stop some new records being set.

Friday was the main event, God turned on a splendid day weather-wise, and our students took it from there, delivering outstanding performances both on the track and in the field. Throwers, jumpers, and runners gave it their all, while dancers, cheerleaders, and helpers brought their enthusiasm and embodied the Kolbe spirit. Events went right to the end of the day and Mr Alweyn announced we’d all have to wait for the results until the following Wednesday assembly, as the ACC Director of Sport, Mr Tom Bottrell, would be in attendance for a special presentation.

It was during the special assembly that we learned Chisholm House had once again been crowned Athletics Champions for 2024! Congratulations to both Loyola and MacKillop Houses, who were named joint Spirit Shield Winners for their outstanding all-around effort on the day. Well done! Results can be accessed online at Results HQ (information is on our KCC Interhouse Carnivals Site). Congratulations to the Age-group Champions and Runners Up, plus the many record breakers for their fantastic individual achievements.

Many thanks to all Houses for participating and to our wonderful staff for the hard work behind the scenes and on the day to make it happen. Also to the many parents and friends who attended to be part of the occasion, we hope you enjoyed it.

“Highlights included the Year 9 Tug-o-War and the relays, as usual, which were great to watch.” College Sports Captains.

Best of luck to the Kolbe Interschool Athletics team, which will be selected based on our Carnival results – stay tuned for more details on training and the upcoming team breakfast. After a few successful years, Kolbe will be competing in the B Division Carnival of the Associated & Catholic Colleges Athletics series on Thursday, 12th September (Week 9). Let’s commit to the team, train hard, take pride, and show them what we can do in the ‘big league’! GO KOLBE!!
