On 14 August, we celebrated the life, love and legacy of St Maximilian Kolbe. Fittingly, this celebration took place on the Feast Day of St Maximilian Kolbe, and the eve of the Feast of the Assumption. Born on 8 January 1894 and martyred on 14 August 1941 at Auschwitz, St Maximilian offered his life for fellow prisoner Franciszek Gajowniczek, a timeless example of selfless love and compassion. Each year we celebrate the Feast of St Maximilian Kolbe with a theme. Mr Bomford and the Ministry team worked with PC staff in the lead up to Kolbe Day on the theme “Brick by brick, built with love”.
Our celebrations began with a whole school Mass led by the much-loved Father Pier. This year marked a significant moment as we celebrated Mass once again, as a whole school in the College Gymnasium. Father Pier’s homily reflected on St Maximilian’s kindness and our chosen theme. He challenged students to think beyond themselves and do something good for the person next to them. A kind and loving community, he said, is built on acts of selfless love done over and over.
Mass was followed by Max’s Games. This year we had our Year 11 students spectate our Year 12’s taking on the staff in Basketball, Netball and Soccer. The students came away with the Soccer and Netball trophies, however the Staff were able to steal one back with a win in the Basketball! Meanwhile, around the campus, our Year 7-10 students competed in inter PC games in their House groups.
At 12:30pm, the much-anticipated sale kicked off. When word got out that the original Noodle Master himself, the legendary Mr Hagiwara was manning the BBQ at the Hagiwara noodle stall, lines formed quickly. Once again, our music students, led by Mr Gryl, kept the tunes flowing and helped lift the festive atmosphere. Laughter and friendly banter rang out from the Dunk Tank, where Mr Jones, for a second year running, took the plunge fully suited, while Mr Pickford endured a soaking at the Splat the Staff stall.
The afternoon peaked with the annual Battle of the Bands and the Staff band KC/DC had students swaying to soul favourites like Valerie and Proud Mary!
Sincere thanks must go to our PC teachers, House Coordinators, Ms Mitchell, Mr Feldman, the groundskeeping team and our administration staff. Without their hard work, Kolbe Day would not have been possible. Finally, to our amazing students: your energy, enthusiasm and effort made the day unforgettable.
