Kolbe’s got the touch

Richard Lacey (HPE Teacher)

What a tournament for Kolbe Catholic College’s Touch Rugby Squad! With six fast-paced, action-packed games, the team put on a stunning display of skill, determination, and teamwork. Each game, made up of two intense 12-minute halves, had its share of excitement – and Kolbe’s squad did not disappoint!

The tournament kicked off with a bang as Kolbe faced Peter Carnley, dominating the field with an 8-0 victory that set the tone for the day. The squad’s energy kept building as they took on Living Waters in Game 2, where star winger Ari Schnaars stole the show, scoring an incredible 8 tries in a 14-0 triumph. Talk about unstoppable!

In Game 3, Kolbe continued their winning streak, defeating Tranby College 11-0, keeping their clean sheet streak intact. The defence was rock solid, but the heat and tough ground began to take their toll on the players. The real test came in Game 4, when they went up against Court Grammar. Despite a valiant effort, Kolbe faced their first loss of the tournament, falling 5-2. This match was a nail-biter and became the defining moment of the day, but it didn’t dampen the team’s spirit.

Determined to bounce back, the squad took on Kings College, a team known for its rugby specialist program, in Game 5. Kolbe’s resilience shone through as they powered to an 8-2 victory. The grand finale against Mother Teresa College saw the squad finish strong with a brilliant 9-2 win, with Ari Schnaars scoring his 20th try of the tournament – an absolute superstar performance!

The tournament wasn’t just about individual brilliance, though. Every player on the Kolbe squad scored a try, showing the strength of their teamwork and unity. Saxon Carr, Brody Sharrock, and Brielle Dredge were unstoppable in the centre, dazzling the crowd with their clever side-steps and slick passes. On defence, Koby Fenton, Taylor, and Abbie Sheridan made try-saving touches that proved crucial to the team’s success, while also adding to the scoreboard themselves. Over on the right wing, Lucia Anderson and Daisy Hingert kept the pressure on their opponents, creating endless headaches for the opposition’s defence.

Kolbe Catholic’s Touch Rugby Squad wrapped up the tournament with a well-deserved second-place finish – a huge achievement! The squad has already set their sights on next year, eager to take things to the next level and bring home the trophy.

Well done, team Kolbe – we can’t wait to see what you’ll achieve next!
