On Friday of Week 9, 70 Year 10 students came together to take part in Kolbe Catholic College’s annual LifeLink SleepOut.
Held on the College grounds, the SleepOut gives students an opportunity to step outside their comfort zones and learn more about the realities faced by people experiencing homelessness in our local community. While the weather forced the event into the College gym for the night, having a safe and secure place to shelter was a privilege that reinforced the purpose of the evening.
With a simple cup of soup for dinner and cardboard boxes as makeshift shelters, students were encouraged to reflect on what it might feel like to go without many of the comforts they usually take for granted. Through presentations from staff, including Mr Iriks, and reflections shared by student leaders, students explored the challenges associated with homelessness and the importance of compassion, dignity and service.
“During the SleepOut, my eyes were truly opened to the harsh realities of poverty and homelessness, and the challenges people face every day.” – Liam
The evening also allowed students to connect with their peers while reflecting on the experience. As Phoebe shared, “The LifeLink SleepOut was awesome. We built box forts, played together, ate tomato soup and learnt a lot. But sleeping on the floor and in the cold really opened my eyes to what people go through every day.”
“The SleepOut was really eye-opening but still fun. Even the simple tomato soup made me feel grateful for what I have and reminded me why supporting others matters, especially when the people who need help are right here in our local community.” – Brielle
Although one night cannot replicate the ongoing challenges of homelessness, the SleepOut encouraged students to consider the importance of safety, shelter and support. Through their participation and fundraising for LifeLink, they demonstrated the KolbeCare values of compassion, service and solidarity with those in need.
