Principal’s Message

Neil Alweyn (Principal)

As we approach the end of Term Three, I am thrilled to announce that our long-awaited Stage 16 build is set to commence next week, marking a significant milestone in the growth of our College. This stage of our development will include the construction of a state-of-the-art double-court gymnasium, four new general purpose classrooms, and a dedicated fitness centre designed for the use of both students and staff. This exciting addition will greatly enhance both the educational experience and well-being of our community.

The new gymnasium will be a major step forward, allowing us to regather as a whole school for events and assemblies—something we’ve been unable to do since the demolition of our old sports hall. The growth in our community has necessitated the need for this larger gathering space, and the gymnasium will not only provide provisions for physical education and intra-school and inter-school sports, but also create opportunities for hosting larger events that will strengthen the sense of unity across our entire community. The classrooms and fitness centre will further support academic and personal development by offering modern learning spaces and health facilities that prioritise physical, social and mental well-being.

The commence of this important project coincides with the culmination of our NAIDOC Week celebrations, making this a perfect opportunity to reflect on how gathering spaces can unite and support communities. NAIDOC Week, through its theme of ‘Keep the Fire Burning’, reminds us of the rich history and culture of
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and we welcomed the opportunity to celebrate at Kolbe, led by our wonderful Aboriginal Liaison Education Assistant, Lisa Dann. For over 65,000 years, indigenous Australians have maintained their strong culture, despite significant atrocities including the forced removal of children from families during the Stolen Generations. NAIDOC Week provides an opportunity for all Australians to acknowledge these past and present struggles while celebrating the resilience and contributions of our indigenous people. It aims to bring all people within our community together in love and action – to celebrate our differences and learn from one another.

In the same spirit, our new Stage 16 build aims to create spaces that foster learning, well-being, and community connection—values we hold dear as a College. As our Stage 16 project begins, we look forward to the positive impact it will have on current and future students, staff and families. These improved facilities will open up new opportunities, from encouraging a more active lifestyle to enhancing our ability to hold meaningful gatherings and celebrations, such as those that take place during NAIDOC Week.

Stay tuned for further updates on Stage 16 as we progress through this exciting chapter in our College’s history, but in the interim I hope you enjoy these ‘flythroughs’ (clip 1 and clip 2) from the architects of our new build.
