Ever wondered why in Hollywood films, when it’s a night scene, it’s always just rained?
So often, when the actors are walking up a city street at night, it will be on wet streets and past damp buildings.
The water on the streets and buildings is needed to show what’s there. When the ground is wet it better reflects the light, adding depth and detail. Without the rain, photos and films at night would have large tracts of blank space.
Trying to see culture and community can sometimes be like filming at night, you know it’s there, but it can be hard to see.
The past few weeks there have been many events that have helped reflect the diverse and innovative community at Kolbe Catholic College and the wider Rockingham and Kwinana region.
I had the privilege of attending the Kwinana Industry Council iWomen graduation, where young women from local schools had the opportunity to be mentored in trades and industry in the area. Hearing their stories and insights was truly special, but it was only possible because of the Kwinana Industry Council and connection between schools and industry.
A Workplace Learning sundowner where we thanked local employers for hosting Kolbe students was another reminder of the supportive community in the area. Without employees and companies taking on work placements, our young people wouldn’t be able to experience all the rich and diverse opportunities that exist within our business community.
Music night was another tangible moment of reflection; where the community and students all joined together to celebrate and share the joy of the performing arts. The crowd cheered along as middle school students performed for the first time, senior students volunteering to help backstage, many others helping with the lighting desk, live stream or taking photographs – it was an event that reflected the joyful and inclusive Kolbe community. I couldn’t stop smiling on the drive home.
Sometimes you don’t realise what’s there until conditions help reflect it back at you. Kolbe has a wonderful community which is present, often unseen, but always supportive. It has been a blessing this term to be present at so many events and moments to witness the warm embrace of school’s culture.
