Principal’s Message

Neil Alweyn (Principal)

One of the joys of working in a community like Kolbe, is the opportunities to witness the variety of gifts and talents that our students possess. Our College thrives on the diversity of skills, interests, and abilities that each individual shares with the community. However, at times in schools it is easy to fall into the trap of comparison, with students measuring themselves against others based on criteria that may not accurately reflect their true strengths.

Albert Einstein said, “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” This analogy highlights the danger of evaluating individuals based on narrow definitions of success. Just as a fish is not meant to climb trees, each of us has our own unique strengths that may not conform to traditional societal expectations.

Corinthians 12:4-6 says ‘Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone.’ This verse reminds us that every member of our Kolbe community is endowed with special gifts and talents, bestowed upon them by God. It is the role of school and parents in partnership, to recognize and nurture these gifts in our students, allowing each individual to flourish in their own way.

Over the last few years, it has been a joyous experience speaking with ex-students at events like our reunions. The range of talented people that have been educated at our College include professional athletes, actors and singers, politicians, service award winners, and many others who are thriving in their field. The diversity of their career paths and achievements is testament to them embracing their unique gifts and talents.

At Kolbe, we must strive to create an environment where all students feel valued and supported in pursuing their passions and interests. This means celebrating not only academic achievements but also artistic endeavors, athletic accomplishments, and acts of service and leadership. By fostering a culture of inclusivity and acceptance, we can ensure that every student feels empowered to stand up, step forward and walk together, celebrating their God-given gifts with each other.
