In his recent e-news article, Mr Jones highlighted the College’s Learning Touchstone which leads into the focus of this article – our collective effort to establish strong classroom routines and clear expectations at the beginning of the year. This focus reflects our shared commitment to ensuring every classroom at Kolbe is a place where students are engaged and learning can thrive.
As we begin the school year, families may notice a strong and consistent emphasis on classroom routines and behavioural expectations across all year levels. This approach is intentional and grounded in evidence about how students learn best.
Research consistently shows that calm, orderly and predictable learning environments help students feel safe, settled, and ready to learn. When routines are clear and consistently applied, students experience less anxiety, fewer distractions, and greater confidence in knowing what is expected of them. This frees up students’ working memory to focus on learning rather than navigating uncertainty or disruption.
A key part of this approach is our Entry and Exit Routines, which are a non-negotiable expectation across the College, alongside consistent classroom structures such as seating plans in Year 7–10 non-practical lessons. These routines ensure lessons begin promptly and end respectfully, setting a positive tone for learning and reinforcing shared responsibility.
Importantly, these consistent routines also allow teachers to do what they do best: teach. When classrooms are calm and expectations are clear, teachers can devote more time to high-quality instruction, meaningful feedback, and supporting individual learners, rather than managing interruptions or uncertainty.
These are not rules, for the sake of rules, but the creation of a classroom culture where students feel at ease, capable, and confident to achieve their best, and where learning time is protected and maximised for every child.
