This year’s National Science Week theme, ‘Seeds of Science: Nurturing Knowledge for All’, inspired students to explore, question and discover through a range of engaging STEM activities across the College.
Year 8 Science students enjoyed a fascinating dry ice demonstration, observing the behaviour of solid carbon dioxide and learning about sublimation. Students also gathered on the Avenue for the much-anticipated elastic band challenge, predicting how many bands could be stretched around a watermelon before it burst.
The Walsh Learning Centre became a hub of creativity and problem-solving as students explored construction and engineering kits. In the Maker’s Factory Challenge, students in Years 7-9 worked together to design, build and test STEM creations, putting mathematical thinking and engineering principles into practice.
Students in Years 10-12 explored the creative side of mathematics through the Desmos Art Challenge, using equations, graphs and functions to produce digital artworks reflecting this year’s theme. Meanwhile, Year 8 students applied their understanding of rates and ratios in the Maths Reaction Chain Challenge, designing chain reactions and analysing the mathematics behind their creations.
Throughout the week, students experimented, collaborated and discovered how STEM connects to everyday life. From testing predictions to bringing designs to life, these experiences demonstrated how a simple seed of an idea can grow into something extraordinary.
