The Wellbeing Team recently had the pleasure of spending time with students from local primary schools as part of Kolbe’s Year 4 Immersion Day experience. We were thrilled to have the opportunity to run a session with the younger students and introduce them to the team, as well as teach them a little about what our role involves, and how we support students and staff at Kolbe. The Year 4’s then got to hear a story about a special part of our brain called the amygdala in a wonderful children’s book called “Hey Warrior” written by Karen Young. Karen Young has founded a website called Hey Sigmund, and works with parents and educators to help build courage in kids and teens with anxiety. We had great fun practising positive affirmations with the help of Snoop Dogg, and learned how big belly breathing helps relax us when our minds get busy, as well as the benefits of mindfully eating marshmallows! A definite hit! To finish, each student got to pick an activity to sit and relax in the company of their classmates.
At Kolbe, we understand that it is never too early to start learning about how our body and mind responds to challenges in our daily lives, and our time with the Year 4’s was a perfect opportunity to share this knowledge. Good mental health and wellbeing is important to enable children to thrive across the early years and into adolescence and young adulthood. Investing in prevention and early intervention gives children the best opportunity for achieving this [1]. We are grateful for the support of our local primary schools to invest in the wellbeing education of our young students, and we can’t wait to see them all again in Year 7!
