Thursday and Friday last week saw Kolbe Catholic College continue the tradition of participating in the World’s Greatest Shave. It was the ninth year in a row that we have participated since we started in 2016.
This year saw 12 students cut 20 cm or more from their hair. This hair will be used to make wigs. At least 4,000 ponytails are needed each year to make enough wigs for those living without hair as a result of medically-induced hair loss conditions.
We also had 21 students shave their heads in support of leukaemia. The hair clippings are stuffed into stockings to make sausage-shaped hair booms that can absorb up to 4L of oil in a spill on land or at sea.
Issy in Year 7 participated on Friday, cutting off over 20 cm of hair and shaving her head to a number 3, and raised $1,500 in the process. Issy said that she chose to do the shave this year in support of her aunty who has been affected by breast cancer. Issy said it felt good doing the shave because she was able to show her aunty support during her struggles.
Year 8 student Kiara raised a very impressive $4,800 in support of her shaving her head. Kiara said that she really enjoyed doing the World’s Greatest Shave, especially watching her friends laugh as they cut off her hair. She said she did the shave for her pop and other family members who have suffered from cancer.
This year, our school team has raised over $34,000. What an amazing effort from an awesome group of students. Thank you so much to all 33 students who participated in the World’ Greatest Shave.
