On Monday, November 11, Kolbe Catholic College launched its first Year 9 Career Taster Day, where 210 eager students got a hands-on introduction to a wide range of careers and industry skills. Ninety students travelled to Murdoch University for an exciting taste of campus life, complete with a career-focused presentation, hands-on workshops in Forensics, English & Creative Writing, and Nursing, and a campus tour. Meanwhile, the remaining 120 students stayed on campus, rotating through engaging, hands-on activities led by expert trainers from various industries.
Students explored six different taster sessions, each designed to spark curiosity and provide insights into potential future pathways. They experienced everything from VR simulations of trade careers to childcare workshops, power tool safety, bricklaying challenges, sports taping, and a fast-paced hospitality session. The day provided valuable glimpses into each field, helping students make more informed choices about future subjects and career options.
For many students, the highlight was trying out real-world skills. “I never thought bricklaying would be so much fun! I actually built something, and it was awesome!” shared one student. Another added, “Using VR to try out jobs like welding and electrical work was like stepping into the future. I never thought I’d enjoy trades this much!” A Murdoch attendee remarked, “The forensic science workshop was amazing. It was so hands-on and made me excited to explore careers I hadn’t considered before.”
The Year 9 Career Taster Day was an exciting opportunity for Kolbe students to expand their horizons as they begin planning their educational and career journeys.
