On Monday, 17th November, all Year 9 students stepped beyond the classroom to experience an exciting Career Taster Day across a number of locations around Perth. The now annual event is designed to spark curiosity and help students explore diverse career pathways through hands-on activities and real-world insights that inspire future choices.
A small group of students ventured to AQWA, where they enjoyed a glass-bottom boat tour and interacted with sea turtles, gaining a glimpse into marine science careers. University life came alive at Murdoch and Notre Dame, with immersive sessions showcasing what a day as a uni student feels like. Back on campus, students dived into hospitality, health, and childcare, mixing mocktails and tackling nappy challenges that kept everyone on their toes.
For those curious about trades and industry, the day featured visits to Hancock Mining, where students learned about iron ore, HR, and autonomous operations, and the Construction Training Centre, complete with cutting-edge VR simulations. The adventure continued at Scitech, exploring defence industry pathways, and concluded with an awe-inspiring tour of Optus Stadium, renowned for sport but is a testament to engineering and construction.
Year 9 student Ian shared, “I loved seeing the different careers up close in the construction Industry—I particularly liked the Front End loader virtual experience at the Construction Futures Centre.”.
Career Taster Day is more than just an excursion, it’s the first step in helping our students make informed choices about their senior school pathways and, ultimately, life beyond Kolbe.
