Co-curricular​

Co-curricular activities take place outside of the traditional classroom setting but complement academic learning. These activities are designed to broaden student learning and build important life skills, such as social and leadership skills, which can also enrich a student’s academic experience.

Kolbe Catholic College offers a wide range of co-curricular activities for students to get involved in outside of the classroom.

Study Groups and Tutoring

Study Groups and Tutoring

Kolbe students are encouraged to take advantage of the many free study groups offered by the College. Our Indigenous Homework and Maths Tutoring Club provides students with access to one-on-one teacher support and peer tutoring.

Year 11 and 12 students also have the opportunity to attend weekly senior school study sessions that aim to develop study skills across the curriculum. The Walsh Learning Centre (WLC) also offers individual, small group and large group study spaces that allow students to maximise academic performance. The WLC is open before and after school, as well as during the school day.

Academic Competitions

Students have the opportunity to be involved in several academic competitions. These competitions not only aim to enhance academic learning but also improve development of important life skills, such as communication, teamwork and problem solving.

Gifted and Talented Education (GATE)

Gifted and Talented Education (GATE)

Students who have been identified as gifted or talented are invited into Kolbe’s GATE program. Participating students are provided with fun open-ended learning opportunities that foster their critical and creative thinking, as well as other life skills, such as teamwork, resilience and communication.

Camps, Excursions and Retreats

Camps, Excursions and Retreats

For many students, attending one of Kolbe’s school camps or retreats is the highlight of their year. It gives them a break from the traditional classroom setting, but also, more importantly, to build relationships, connect with others and foster a true sense of belonging.

Kolbe has a multitude of camps, excursions and retreats available for students throughout the year in all learning areas. These activities have academic and social benefits for our students, and provide safe, fun, educational and memorable experiences.

Kolbe’s Performing Arts Learning Area includes Music, Theatre/Drama, and Dance. In this energetic and lively department, students have the chance to participate in a huge variety of classes to develop their creativity, passion and skills.

Students can also extend their learning outside of the classroom and be involved in the many activities on offer throughout the year. These include:

Languages

Learning another language is not only fun but can greatly enhance student performance across the curriculum. From Year 7, students choose to study Japanese or Italian, then have the opportunity to continue in upper school at an ATAR or general level.

Visual Art and Media Art

The Arts programs at Kolbe are designed to expose students to many different artistic styles and media. Activities include painting, sculpture, ceramics, installations, printmaking, graphic design and multimedia. Students who study Visual Arts at Kolbe can participate in the following co-curricular activities:

Health, Physical Education & Sport

We offer a wide range of sporting and fitness activities at the College to promote the health and wellbeing of our students. We provide opportunities that cater for all physical capabilities and encourage our students to have fun, be active and find a sport they enjoy.

Carnivals and Sports Days

Carnivals at the College are more than just sporting events! They are an opportunity for students to demonstrate House spirit through the enthusiastic ways they participate in the day. Dance-offs, mascot races and novelty events run alongside the sporting events, giving every student a chance to participate regardless of their skills.

Carnivals that students look forward to throughout the year are:

  • KCC Swimming Carnival

Kolbe also competes alongside other schools in a range of activities, including:

Co-Curricular Activities

As part of the Health and Physical Education curriculum at Kolbe, students have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of activities that take them outside of the walls of the classroom. Marine Studies, Outdoor Education, Physical Education Studies and Certificate II: Sport and Recreation are all subjects in which students can expect to be immersed in interesting and challenging experiences.

Student Leadership​

At Kolbe, we believe that all students have the potential to become true leaders. By giving students the opportunity to develop their leadership skills within the school community and beyond, we hope to create responsible global citizens of the future — citizens who understand the world around them, take an active role in the community, and work to make the world a more equitable and sustainable place for all.

We take pride in developing our young leaders, in giving them the confidence and skills they need in order to make meaningful contributions to society and the world beyond Kolbe.

Our student leaders are each given opportunities to:

  • lead and inspire others;
  • take on important responsibilities;
  • be an integral member of a team;
  • collaborate with their fellow leaders;
  • think critically and creatively;
  • develop communication and time management skills;
  • understand their worth.

Year 7-9 Student Leadership Opportunities and Programs

Students in Years 7 to 9 have the chance to nominate for formal leadership roles as Student Leaders, but there are many other opportunities for students in our junior school to take responsibility. Leadership in many forms is encouraged and acknowledged.

Year 10-11 Student Leadership Opportunities and Programs

Our senior students are offered many varied leadership opportunities and positions. Students in Years 10 and 11 have the chance to nominate for formal leadership roles as Student Leaders and Peer Support Leaders. However, all students are encouraged to practise their leadership skills, no matter where they are in their leadership journey.
