A Journey of Connection

Kolbe College

Kolbe Catholic College is proud to announce the commencement of a City-Country School Partnership with Luurnpa Catholic School, an initiative made possible through funding from the Yadha Muru Foundation and endorsed by Catholic Education WA. Luurnpa Catholic School, part of the Catholic Diocese of Broome, is located in the Wirrimanu Aboriginal Community at Balgo Hills in the Kimberley region of Western Australia.

In Week 7, two dedicated Kolbe Catholic College teachers, Sherie Chant and Tracey Edgell, had the privilege of travelling to Luurnpa Catholic School to teach secondary students. Their time in Balgo Hills was an eye-opening experience, leaving them with a profound sense of gratitude and admiration for the commitment and sacrifice of the staff working in this remote school and the wider community.

Upon arrival, Sherie and Tracey were warmly welcomed by the students, who eagerly engaged in a variety of enriching activities, including cooking, photography, and visual arts, alongside their core subject learning. Throughout their stay, the teachers also had the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the religious and cultural traditions of the Wirrimanu community.

One of the most memorable moments of their visit was the chance to go out onto Country with community elders and students. Together, they shared Dreamtime stories, baked dampers, and took part in a deeply moving “muddied up” ceremony, where they were covered in mud before cooling off with a swim in the breathtaking waters of Lake Gregory.

Another highlight of their journey was an intimate eucharistic celebration with the Community church leaders in Fr Paol’s Parish home. This special gathering was a beautiful testament to the faith and unity that binds the Luurnpa Catholic School community together.

Kolbe Catholic College is honoured to be part of this meaningful partnership and looks forward to strengthening ties with Luurnpa Catholic School. This collaboration is not just about sharing knowledge but about learning from one another, embracing cultural richness, and fostering a deeper understanding of community and faith.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Yadha Muru Foundation and Catholic Education WA for making this partnership possible, and we eagerly anticipate future opportunities to grow together in faith and learning.
