Lest We Forget

Robin Delamont (Defence School Mentor)

On our first day of this Term, our school community gathered on The Avenue for a deeply moving ANZAC Assembly that paid tribute not only to the brave men and women who have served our nation, but also to the often-forgotten animal companions who stood alongside them in times of war.

The assembly opened with a dignified march by the Australian Defence Force (ADF) cadets, whose presence brought a sense of honour and tradition. The stirring sound of the bagpipes filled the air, creating a solemn atmosphere, followed by a powerful trumpet performance of The Last Post, which echoed through the crowd, calling us all to stillness and reflection.

This year, our assembly placed special emphasis on the animals who served in wartime—horses, dogs, pigeons, and donkeys. The striking presence of two horses from the 10th Light Horse Regiment in Rockingham, Illah and Patriot, and their riders, Krystal and Laura, were a highlight of the event, reminding us of the loyalty, courage, and sacrifice of the animals who carried soldiers into battle, delivered critical messages, and offered comfort in the most trying of times. Year 9 student Willow commented that the horses were her favourite part of the Assembly as they were so unexpected, a great surprise and HUGE.

We were honoured to welcome Lieutenant Claire Goward, RAN, as our guest speaker. Her thoughtful address reflected on the human stories of ANZAC bravery and mateship —stories often untold but deeply deserving of our remembrance. Alex in Year 8 commented that he felt very privileged to listen to Lieutenant Goward. He said that the way she made her message relatable really captured his attention and resonated with him.

Adding a layer of poignant beauty to the ceremony were the hundreds of handcrafted clay poppies created by our talented Year 7 art students. Displayed with care around The Avenue, these poppies symbolised our dual tribute: red for the fallen soldiers, and one purple one for the animals who served. Their vibrant colours and thoughtful arrangement provided a powerful visual representation of remembrance, reverence, and gratitude.

The assembly was not only a moment of reflection but a lesson in empathy, and history. Through the respectful participation of students, staff, and community members, we honoured all who have served—two-legged and four—and renewed our commitment to never forget.

”It is important that we stand together, in silence, to respect and remember them. The time we spend in this moment is minor compared to the great sacrifice they made, for not only us, but our future. In this moment may we not only reflect on the actions of war and the brutality they faced. But how we, as one, can honour their sacrifice. Lest we forget” – Charlie, Year 12
