Gateway to Discovery

Skye Ogrizek – GATE Coordinator

Kolbe’s Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) Program has had a fantastic start to the year, with students across all year groups diving into a range of enriching and challenging learning experiences.

Our Year 7 students kicked off their GATE journey with an extended challenge centred on the theme of Ocean Exploration, investigating topics spanning marine biology, environmental science, creative writing and mechanical engineering. The term also saw Year 7 students and their families attend the annual GATE Welcome Breakfast, a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the program and the exciting pathways that lie ahead.

Year 8 students tackled Australia Under Pressure, an extended challenge focused on natural disasters. Working in collaborative groups, students selected a specific Australian natural disaster to investigate in depth, exploring topics such as human behaviour, survival strategies, disaster statistics and leadership during times of crisis. A standout highlight was a visit to the Rockingham SES facility, where students heard from dedicated volunteers and paramedic Lauren D’Arcy about the realities of frontline emergency response.

Year 9 students have embarked on a year-long exploration of space and the challenges of living beyond Earth. Investigating topics such as space flight, robotics and food science, students are working toward a complex real-world challenge: determining everything humanity would need to establish a lunar colony on another planet. Year 9 student Morgan described it as “a really fun and challenging project!”

We are incredibly proud of our GATE students and look forward to seeing what they achieve in the months ahead.
