Kolbe Catholic College came together on 19 and 24 June in a powerful show of support for the Leukaemia Foundation, participating in both the Chop for Cancer and the World’s Greatest Shave. Courageous students from Years 7 to 12 demonstrated remarkable commitment to the cause, with 10 students cutting off at least 20cm of hair for donation, and 21 students bravely shaving their heads. Joining them in solidarity were two dedicated staff members, who also took part in the shave.
Year 12 student leaders played a pivotal role in the planning and running of these major events. The electric atmosphere was amplified by their coordination of a bake sale and sausage sizzle, which contributed to the College’s fundraising efforts. Thanks to the combined generosity of students, staff, families and the wider Kolbe community, the College raised an outstanding total of over $30,000 through fundraising initiatives and via donations to the Kolbe Team page.
All funds raised go directly to the Leukaemia Foundation, who help support Australians facing blood cancer by funding vital research, accommodation and emotional support services. Kolbe’s contribution is enough to help fund a PhD scholarship recipient working on critical research for six months.
Reflecting on the experience, Year 8 student Alexander shared, “I was lucky to participate in such an event and raise money for an important cause. The Kolbe spirit was at its highest in support of one another, and I left with a feel-good buzz cut!”
