This year’s Languages Week at Kolbe Catholic College was a vibrant celebration of connection, culture, and—fittingly—love. Building on the theme from our Mother Languages celebration in February, the week was made even more special by the arrival of students from our Japanese brother school, Keio Futsubu. Their presence brought a wonderful international energy to campus, adding another rich layer to our appreciation of languages and the ties they create between people.
Across the week, classrooms buzzed with activity. Students tested their knowledge in lively quizzes, showcased their creativity in Minecraft competitions, and indulged in mouth-watering Italian food degustations. Our Pastoral Care sessions saw plenty of friendly rivalry during the Languages Quiz, while the Walsh Learning Centre’s striking tree display proudly highlighted the incredible diversity of languages spoken in our school community—a colourful reminder of the cultural wealth we share every day.
For Year 8 student Beau, meeting the visiting Japanese students was a highlight:
“Meeting the visiting Japanese students was a terrific experience, especially playing volleyball, cricket, and chatting about our schools. Classroom activities, board games, and competitions also helped me learn more about Italian culture and history.”
Alex (Year 8) agreed, saying the week was a great way to bring everyone together:
“It’s a really fun way to get everyone involved in the excitement of learning new languages! There are super fun activities in language classes like quizzes and games that everyone can participate in, and beautiful displays in our Library bring the theme ‘Love of languages to life!”
